Although widely distributed systems have been familiar to us for some time, the true novelty lies in managing the distribution of applications across a highly diverse set of platforms and ensuring their seamless operation over extended periods. To achieve this, we need significant advancements in application development, deployment, and operational mechanisms. A single logical platform should have the intelligence to adapt to various physical platforms, such as smartphones, smart garage doors, vehicles, traditional hardware, and, of course, clouds.
Imagine a revolutionary technology that intelligently profiles applications and connected data, placing them on the most appropriate physical platform for processing. Moreover, this magical system can adapt and move applications as needed, say, when prices fluctuate among cloud providers or the reliability of remote platforms changes. By running identical copies of applications and data on multiple platforms, it can also provide redundancy for enhanced reliability.
However, it's crucial to recognize that this transformation won't happen overnight. We will likely witness the gradual emergence of new applications built on diverse platforms, catering to specific requirements like autonomous driving systems, which have already been in development for the past decade. As we accumulate a sufficient number of such applications, the demand for better platform-to-platform integration will grow, leading to the emergence of a unified abstract platform that encompasses a wide range of devices and computers. This transformative process will ultimately pave the way for ubiquitous computing.
